Saving Ghana's Endangered Primates

Wildlife Vets International in collaboration with Twycross Zoo have been supporting West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA) and the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana by providing primate expertise to their teams and local veterinary school students.

Last week, the team successfully conducted comprehensive health checks on all eleven white-naped mangabeys housed in the Forested enclosure at Kumasi Zoo. These assessments are a vital component of an ongoing feasibility study that WAPCA is developing to evaluate whether the conservation translocation of captive-bred mangabeys can significantly enhance the genetic sustainability of fragmented wild populations.

The health checks will uncover any underlying issues or diseases that might compromise a future release and will contribute essential data towards achieving the study’s genetic objectives. WAPCA’s mission—to safeguard the future of West African primates and their habitats through the One Plan Approach—is exemplified by this collaboration, showcasing how integrated efforts can maximize conservation outcomes.
