Saving Myrto

Sea turtles face many threats. Serious head wounds and damaged flippers led little green turtle, Myrto, to be washed up on a beach on Paros, Greece, earlier this year. Weighing less than 6kg, she was very weak. But luckily for Myrto, help was at hand.

If you love turtles, please donate now to save more animals like Myrto. Our BigGive #ChristmasChallenge runs until next Tuesday. For seven days only, every£1 you give will be doubled thanks to our generous match funders.

Let’s get turtles back into the ocean where they belong, so they can play their vital role in the survival of their species and protecting our marine environment.

Myrto was taken by police speedboat to nearby Naxos island wildlife protection. The Naxos team took part in ourTurtle Health and Welfare Workshop with the ARCHELON Rescue Centre back in February, and it was there that they met the WVI Turtle Team, Matthew Rendle RVN and marine vet Tania Monreal. The Naxos team quickly turned to Tania for advice.

Tania was able to confirm theantibiotic dosage already recommended by the ARCHELON team, and give further adviceon treatment of Myrto’s wounds, appropriate pain relief, fluid therapy and thebest form of nutrition to tempt her to start eating again

Thanks to the combined efforts of our Turtle Team, and theteams at Naxos and ARCHELON, it wasn’t long before Myrto starting diving again, and moving around under water. Just two months later, Myrto was able to returnto the ocean.

We have been working with the team at the ARCHELON Rescue Centresince 2019, to build their confidence and capacity in turtle medicine, and holding the workshop there this year allowed us to bring together turtle rescuers from across Greece, strengthening connections between them and with WVI.

Please donate today to help more local vets and rehabilitators get the training and support theyneed to save turtles like Myrto.
